The CUInsight Experience podcast: Chuck Purvis – Reenergized and reengaged (#84)
“We’ve got to collaborate as an industry to be able to innovate.” - Chuck Purvis
Thank you for tuning in to episode 84 of The CUInsight Experience podcast with your host, Randy Smith, co-founder of CUInsight.com. This episode is brought to you by our friends at PSCU. As the nation’s premier payments CUSO, PSCU proudly supports the success of more than 1,500 credit unions.
The credit union industry is headed into an exciting period of innovation and digital transformation. As such, I’m chatting with Chuck Purvis, President and CEO of Coastal Credit Union in North Carolina, on this week’s episode about what credit unions can and should do to stay relevant, grow, and prosper in the coming years. Chuck and I also talk about the challenges he and his team at Coastal have had to overcome these last few months.
During the episode, Chuck and I discuss shifts in member service and the long-term implications, as well as the need for credit unions to collaborate as an industry on new and innovative digital platforms. Chuck also shares what he feels needs to change to keep credit unions relevant from now on and how he’s grown as a leader through this crisis.
In the leadership and life hacks portion of the show, Chuck and I talk about some of the leadership lessons he’s picked up along the way, as well as what he’s learned from a few of the setbacks. We discuss his path to Coastal, what it took to build a phenomenal executive team, and how the inspiration has changed over the years. He shares that “Git ‘er done” is his favorite saying, that leaders aren’t always the smartest people in the room, and that when he has a day off he loves to be at his lake house or on the water relaxing.
We finish up with the rapid-fire questions and find out that Chuck wanted to be an architect when he was young. He also loves any song by Rascal Flatts. He also shares that spending quality time with his family at the lake house has become more important, while things, stuff, and trips have become less. Chuck shares some very insightful final thoughts that you don’t want to miss! Enjoy!
