Rep. Upton announces retirement
Rep. Fred Upton, R-Mich., announced he will not seek re-election in 2022. Upton, who has served in Congress since 1987, has long supported credit unions.
“Fred Upton has long been a friend to America’s credit unions and their millions of members. Fred’s pragmatic approach and drive to find commonsense solutions—most recently in his push to forgive most Paycheck Protection Program loans to help small business owners and credit unions focus on recovering from the pandemic—has long been an example of leadership in Congress,” said CUNA President/CEO Jim Nussle, who served in the House with Upton from 1991 to 2007. “I have appreciated working alongside Fred, first in my time in Congress, and in recent years to improve financial well-being for Michiganders and people across the country. I wish him well in his next adventure.”
“The Michigan Credit Union League received the news of Congressman Upton’s decision to retire with sadness and reflection. The Congressman has been a true friend to our Michigan credit union industry and has a reputation for taking the hard road, even when he could have easily taken a pass,” said Patty Corkery, Michigan Credit Union League president/CEO. “Congressman Upton has been a champion for his district in sponsoring the SAFE Banking Act, his opposition to IRS data gathering, being a leader during the pandemic on PPP loans and education to our credit unions and our team, as well as his commitment to bipartisanship as a member of the Problem Solvers Caucus. There are far too many more issues to mention than I can here. In summary, we appreciate our credit union partnership with Congressman Upton and thank him for his service. He will be missed.”
