WATERLOO, IA (October 15, 2013) -- Veridian Credit Union held a free Community Shred Day on Saturday, October 12 at five Veridian branches across the state to help raise awareness of the importance of taking steps to protect your identity. The event drew more than 3,100 people, who safely discarded private documents in an environmentally friendly way by bringing 77,800 pounds of documents to be shredded. Veridian partnered with Iron Mountain® and On-Site Information Destruction, Inc. to provide this shred opportunity at Veridian branches in Ankeny, Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, Waterloo and West Des Moines. In 2012, the same event drew 2,500 people and 61,000 pounds of shredded documents.
The shredded material will be recycled into commercial grade paper towels, toilet paper and other paper products. Veridian estimates that the Community Shred Day saved 973 trees, up from 768 trees in 2012.
Veridian also partnered with Goodwill Industries and the Dell Reconnect program to help participants recycle old computer equipment at no cost.
