FORT WORTH, TX (August 28, 2014) -- Unity One Credit Union held its eighth annual “Gear Up 4 School” supply giveaway on Saturday, August 23, from 9 – 11a.m at its Northside branch located at 2625 N. Main St. (across the street from Billy Bob’s parking lot and next to Los Vaqueros). The event, created to be a resource for families, gifts children with school mandated supplies while exposing them to small businesses and organizations in the community.
The credit union distributed nearly 400 drawstring backpacks containing items such as: pencils, notebooks, crayons and scissors. Supplies were distributed first come first served, and the students receiving the supplies had to be present.
“Giving back to the communities we serve has always been at the heart of what we do. This event in particular allows Unity One employees the opportunity to connect first hand with those in need,” said Gary Williams, president.
Sandra Garza, former Washington Heights Elementary school principal, was also on hand to place backpacks on to students’ backs. “These are my babies,” she said, “Although I’m at a different school, this event keeps me coming back.”
In addition to the backpack and supplies, attendees enjoyed free food from Dickey’s BBQ and visited booths manned by local businesses and organizations such as: the Fort Worth Library, LULAC, Archstone Dental, Texas Brigades and Rodeo Dental.
