TruChoice’s unique credit card program allows members to donate with every purchase
At TruChoice Federal Credit Union, donating to local charities is as easy as swiping your credit card!
TruChoice members choose to be a ‘TruHero’ every time they use their TruHero credit card. A portion of the interchange income from each purchase is donated to the Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital (via the Children’s Miracle Network) or the McAuley Residence. Last year $20,897 was donated to these organizations, bringing the total since the card’s introduction in 2009 to $151,453. TruHero members’ cards include the logo of their chosen charities—an ongoing reminder of their TruHero status.
The program is a unique way to encourage members to support local charities. With over 50% of TruChoice credit card holders opting to become a TruHero, members drive the success of the program. While Cash Back and Rewards cards are available from many financial institutions, TruChoice wanted to do something different. Allowing members to choose donating over rewards highlights the ‘people helping people’ philosophy of credit unions, while strengthening ties to the local community. As Ken Acker, CEO of Portland-Maine-based TruChoice, says, “Our TruHero card gives members an easy way to give back. They don’t have to manage individual donations; we take care of everything. All our members have to do is use the card – we take care of the rest!”
