Summit Credit Union invites credit unions to join movement for global good

Roadmap for credit card program brings financial support to international communities

Last year, Summit Credit Union launched its VISA Global Good Card in partnership with the World Council of Credit Unions (WOCCU). Summit donated $10 for each card opened and 20 percent of all interchange fees on purchases to WOCCU’s Worldwide Foundation for Credit Unions. Additionally, participating members could make cash donations via their rewards points.

“We created the Global Good Card as another way for our members to help people throughout the world become financially self‐sustaining,” said Summit Credit Union CEO & President Kim Sponem. “We knew our members would embrace the chance to be a part of something bigger just by using their credit cards. Now we want to help other credit unions create their own programs to benefit the WOCCU Foundation and further its important mission.”

Summit’s insight was right. In 12 short months, 500 members opened Global Good Cards, nearly $10,000 for the Worldwide Foundation for Credit Unions. Which begged the question: How much more good could be done if credit unions across the U.S. joined together?

That’s why Summit is offering to help any credit unions interested in creating their own card program to benefit the WOCCU Foundation. Free of charge, Summit will share a library of editable marketing templates, from card art and branch sales tools to social media posts and a press release. They documented a dozen tried‐and‐true best practices to drive smooth program implementation, and for any questions that arise throughout the process, Summit advisors will be available to offer their firsthand expertise.

“Summit has developed a proven model with the Global Good Card’s success,” said WOCCU President & Chief Executive Officer Brian Branch. “We’re hopeful credit unions across the U.S. will follow their roadmap, so we can continue to champion the credit union difference and equip people around the world with access to high‐quality and affordable financial services.”

Established in 1971 and headquartered in Madison, Wisconsin, WOCCU is the leading international trade association and development agency for financial inclusion. To date, WOCCU has helped serve millions of credit union members in 109 countries worldwide.
