State’s Top Credit Union Volunteer Award Given to Pottstown Resident

HARRISBURG, PA (May 21, 2013) Dr. C. Ross McFarland of Pottstown was recently presented the Pennsylvania Credit Union Association’s (PCUA) top award for volunteers.  McFarland accepted the Joseph A. Moore Award for the 2013 Outstanding Volunteer of the Year during the gala banquet at the PCUA 79th Annual Convention & Exposition held May 18 in Hershey.

For more than 34 years, Ross has been involved in the credit union movement. Prior to joining the Pottstown-headquartered Tri County Area Federal Credit Union Board of Directors in 1995, he had volunteered with P.M.M.C. (aka Pottstown Memorial Medical Center) Federal Credit Union that was merged into Dana Pottstown Federal Credit Union in 1980, or as better known today as Diamond Credit Union, Pottstown. McFarland served on the Diamond board until 1995.

McFarland has also served as the Montgomery County Chapter of Credit Unions Board Director for 23 years. Additionally, he served on several Chapter Committees including legislative affairs liaison, scholarship, and chapter golf outing.

A native Texan, McFarland earned an undergraduate degree from Prairie View A&M University, his master’s from the University of Kansas, and his Ph.D. in microbiology from the University of Michigan. He retired after a long career in microbiology in laboratories for pharmaceutical and healthcare.

“Ross has devoted thousands of hours serving others through his credit union volunteerism,” said PCUA President/CEO Jim McCormack. “It was a pleasure being able to recognize his decades of service in front of his credit union peers.”

The Volunteer of the Year Award is presented in memory of Joseph A. Moore, who served as an Association Board of Director from 1936-1972. He sat as Board Chairman for three terms and was the state’s first national delegate to the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) Board of Directors.

Credit unions are financial cooperatives that provide affordable financial services to help their owner/members. The Harrisburg-based Pennsylvania Credit Union Association is a trade association that provides legislative, promotional, educational and operational support for more than 400 credit unions in Pennsylvania. These credit unions have assets in excess of $37 billion and serve more than 3.7 million members.
