Silver State Schools Credit Union & Jim Marsh Kia honor resilient teacher with brand-new Kia Seltos

LAS VEGAS, NV (May 17, 2024) — Silver State Schools Credit Union (SSSCU), a Las Vegas-based financial institution with nearly $1.2 Billion in assets and which serves over 64,000 members partnered with Jim Marsh Kia to surprise Jeff Comer, a Desert Oasis High School math teacher, with the gift of a brand-new 2024 Kia Seltos.

Mr. Comer experienced significant losses over the past several years. Two years ago, his wife passed away unexpectedly, leaving him to raise their five children, ages 4 to 22 years old. Most recently, Mr. Comer and his family lost their home and his car in a fire. Despite these tragic hardships, he continues to display an extraordinary commitment to his students and his colleagues.

“Mr. Comer is a math tutor to students across the district, not just his home school,” attested a fellow teacher. “Mr. Comer attends his students’ activities and games, showing them that he cares about them as people, not just their math skills,” noted a grateful parent and teacher. “Mr. Comer is an integral part of his school community and often mentors new teachers to help ensure they are successful,” praised another one of his colleagues. “He has endured all this hardship while keeping a great attitude, a smile on his face, and missing very little work,” shared another fellow teacher. These thoughtful testimonials, among many others, reflect the deep admiration and respect Mr. Comer has earned from his peers.

“Mr. Comer’s unwavering commitment to his students and education peers embodies the spirit of our community and serves as an inspiration to us all,” says Scott A. Arkills, President/CEO, Silver State Schools Credit Union. “It is our privilege to provide him with this new car, a small token of our immense gratitude for all he does for our youth.”

This is the 7th year Silver State Schools Credit Union has partnered with the Clark County School District and a Southern Nevada auto dealership to award a new vehicle to an educator in need. Teachers are nominated based on how they engage and support students in the classroom and extra-curricular activities; and most importantly, how each teacher overcomes personal challenges and/or hardships to continue serving their students.

Since its inception, Silver State Schools Credit Union’s upholds its ongoing commitment to support the educators who shape the future of our community. As a financial institution deeply rooted in the Southern Nevada educational landscape, we are proud to stand by our teachers and show our appreciation for their tireless efforts.
