Securityplus Federal Credit Union and Baltimore’s Youthworks Program join forces to champion financial literacy

BALTIMORE, MD (February 26, 2025) |

In an effort to empower Baltimore's youth, Securityplus Federal Credit Union seeks to enhance its partnership with the Mayor's Office of Employment Development's YouthWorks program. This collaboration is focused on providing the city's youth with crucial financial literacy, career mentorship, and workforce readiness skills to set the stage for their future success.

During Black History Month, Securityplus took a significant step to underscore the vital role of financial education and career preparedness by hosting an Open Dialogue Event. This meeting brought together financial experts, workforce development leaders, and community influencers. Together, they discussed the importance of nurturing Baltimore’s future leaders. The event is a cornerstone of Securityplus’ s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives and was led by Anthony Carpenter, Team Lead for the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Team, with key contributions from YouthWorks' Tonisha Patterson, Senior Operations Manager; Curtis Landen, Internship Coordinator; and Nadia Sims, Senior Program Manager. The group spotlighted the transformative impact of the program and the essential ongoing support it requires.

A critical topic on the table was the importance of instilling financial literacy early in young workers' lives. Curtis Landen stressed the significance of foundational financial education, remarking, “It’s crucial for partners like Securityplus to instill principles of budgeting and saving early on, fostering healthier financial habits among the youth.” This proactive approach is designed to equip young professionals with the essential tools for financial stability.

Looking to the future, Securityplus is dedicated to continuing its advocacy for financial inclusion, workforce development, and mentorship, to enrich both individuals and the larger Baltimore community. “Through our sustained engagement with YouthWorks and other initiatives, we are committed to cultivating an empowered generation of leaders who are not only ready to face tomorrow's challenges but are also prepared to capitalize on the opportunities that await,” says Obi Ndukwe, Chief People and Impact Officer.

With these ongoing efforts, Securityplus Federal Credit Union is ensuring that Baltimore’s youth are poised for a bright and prosperous future, well-equipped to navigate and flourish in the evolving economic landscape.
