Retired Gen. Colin Powell to address credit unions at CUNA Governmental Affairs Conference

WASHINGTON, DC (December 1, 2016) — Former Secretary of State and retired Army Gen. Colin Powell will deliver the Tuesday session keynote at CUNA Governmental Affairs Conference on February 28, 2017, in Washington, D.C. “What can you possibly say about Gen. Powell that hasn’t already been said?,” stated CUNA President/CEO Jim Nussle. “He’s a hero, a statesman, a man of character and a pivotal figure in our country’s last half-century. I’m honored to welcome him at CUNA GAC and I’m certain that his insights into leadership will be deeply valued by all in attendance.”

Between his time as a soldier and a diplomat, Powell has served the United States in various capacities for nearly six decades. He holds the distinction of being the first African American to serve on the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and in 2001 became the first to serve as secretary of state. He has authored two bestselling books and received dozens of awards, including two Presidential Medals of Freedom, the Liberty Medal, the Ronald Reagan Freedom Award and an honorary knighthood by Queen Elizabeth II.

During his keynote, Powell will discuss leadership, confidence and American optimism as he shares key lessons learned from his experience in public service. Joining Powell as keynoters are Emmy-winning journalist Bob Schieffer and FOCUS Brands, Inc. Group President Kat Cole. Additionally, humanitarian and business innovator Derreck Kayongo will present the conference’s ED (Filene) Talk.

CUNA GAC is the largest advocacy event in the credit union movement, gathering more than 5,000 credit union leaders to remind policymakers that credit unions and their more than 100 million members matter. Attendees advocate to representatives face to face during Hill Hikes, attend engaging keynote and breakout sessions and tour the largest exhibit hall in the financial services industry.
