Home to over 75,000 veterans, El Paso proudly holds the title of “Veterans’ Capital of the USA.” Embracing this distinction, Raiz Federal Credit Union is dedicated to serving the veteran community as a reliable financial partner, assisting them and their families in achieving their financial goals. As part of this commitment, the Community Impact team at Raiz helped the El Paso Chapter 187 of Disabled Army Veterans (DAV) secure a $6,000 Community Development Grant from the Cornerstone League Foundation.
The Cornerstone League Foundation provides support to credit unions and their communities through grants designed to assist organizations like the DAV in delivering impactful programs that improve lives and strengthen communities. This particular grant aims to address four of twelve barriers that hinder economic growth and prosperity worldwide: Technology, Inclusion, Education, and Hunger.
With the grant, the DAV has transformed challenges into opportunities, creating meaningful change for its members and their families. Initiatives include providing backpacks filled with school supplies for children of veterans and organizing holiday celebrations that bring joy and connection. Raiz Community Engagement Officer Bruce Goolsby shared, “Working with the DAV, especially during Vetsgiving, has been a rewarding experience. Providing financial education and resources to veterans boosts their confidence and opportunities, and this grant has made that possible. I’m proud to be part of an organization that stands beside Vets and their families throughout their financial journey.”
The DAV also used the grant to enhance its recruitment and advocacy efforts by purchasing essential technology equipment to deliver informative presentations to elected officials and increasing awareness of available services and resources among newly released veterans. By creating a welcoming environment complete with refreshments and resources, the organization ensures that veterans feel supported as they navigate the complexities of claims and benefits.
The grant has not only addressed immediate needs but also contributed to breaking down systemic barriers to economic growth for local veterans. By providing resources, creating opportunities for engagement, and advocating for their rights, Raiz helps the DAV, its members, and their families build brighter futures.
