People’s Credit Union and Treasurer Raimondo Commend Portsmouth High School Students for Their Commitment to Financial Literacy

Financial Scholars Program provides innovative financial literacy platform for students

MIDDLETOWN, RI (June 14, 2013) On Friday, June 12th, People’s Credit Union, along with school officials and General Treasurer Gina M. Raimondo, recognized Portsmouth High School students for the completion of an innovative financial literacy program.

The Rhode Island Financial Scholars Program, sponsored by People’s Credit Union, utilizes the EverFiTM platform, an online program that teachers can use as a valuable financial literacy tool which can easily integrate with a school’s curriculum. The platform is aligned to state standards and consists of ten modules covering critical financial literacy topics such as budgeting, credit health/scores, insurance, student loans, mortgages, taxes, and saving and investing. People’s Credit Union currently sponsors several schools throughout the state, at no cost to the participating schools.

“Personal finance is one of the most important lessons we can teach today’s youth to help prepare them for the future.  We are so pleased we can help educate students on the importance of financial literacy through our Financial Scholars Program,” said Ellen Ford, President & CEO of People’s Credit Union.

“I'm grateful to see that collaboratives are being formed between the public and private sector to help educate our youth in the area of financial literacy,” said Ray Oswald, teacher at Portsmouth. “As I tell my students who enter my personal finance classes, "100% of you will use the knowledge you acquire in this class throughout your life.”

“This program makes students aware of the important role financial empowerment will play in their future decisions,” said Raimondo who participated in a Q & A with the students. “I appreciate the teachers and administration who took advantage of the EverFi program to help ensure their students will be financially responsible citizens.”
