Oregon Community’s Third Annual Volunteer Day

EUGENE, OR – Oregon Community Credit Union branches and corporate offices were closed on Monday, Feb. 18 for President’s Day. However, the staff did not take the day off. OCCU’s 250 plus employees spent the day volunteering at 18 different nonprofit organizations throughout the Eugene/Springfield and Salem communities. This year marks the third annual All Staff Volunteer Day.

Together, employees were able to contribute more than 750 hours of volunteer service. Employees teamed up in groups of five to 30 at each location, which included Greenhill Humane Society, Boys & Girls Club, City of Eugene, Womenspace, Cascade Raptor Center, ShelterCare, Eugene Mission, the Science Factory, Thurston Elementary School, Willamette High School, the Conestoga Huts, and many more. Staff volunteers participated in the following activities:

  • Cleaned and painted laundry rooms at the Bagley Downs apartment complex for St. Vincent de Paul,
  • Sorted through donated items and clothing for Catholic Community Services,
  • Maintained and resurfaced trails at the Mt. Pisgah Arboretum,
  • Dismantled more than 150 recycled computers at NextStep Recycling,
  • Painted rooms for the YWCA Salem Outreach Shelter and
  • Stuffed 5,000 plastic eggs with candy in preparation for Willamalane’s community Megga hunt event.

OCCU’s mission is to provide exceptional service in everything it does, including volunteer work. “Community is our middle name,” said Rosie Pryor, OCCU’s Chief Marketing & Strategy Officer. “Our employees tell us that they get more out of the [Volunteer] day than they give.” Director of Retail Operations Terri Baker says, “Being supported and encouraged to volunteer in our community is one of the biggest perks we have as an employee of OCCU.”

Branch Manager and Volunteer Day Project Leader Tina DeHaven said that Volunteer Day solidifies what she loves most about OCCU. “Demonstrating the commitment with all of our staff for one day certainly magnifies our passion to help our community. I enjoy making a difference in our community, better yet working for an organization that mirrors my same passions is even better.”
