Ohio Credit Union Foundation Grants $10,000 in Disaster Relief in Wake of Hurricane Sandy

Columbus, Ohio (November 7, 2012) – The Ohio Credit Union Foundation (OCUF) responded to the National Credit Union Foundation’s (NCUF) activation of CUAid by granting $10,000 in assistance for credit union members and communities impacted by Hurricane Sandy.

“We know the need by our credit unions neighbors to the east is great,” said Stan Barnes, Chair of the OCUF Board of Trustees. “From what we have gathered, the lack of electricity is hampering credit unions’ ability to serve their members in their time of great need. We want to help.”

The NCUF activated CUAid last week as the devastation along the East Coast from Hurricane Sandy became apparent. According to the NCUF, more than $100,000 in disaster relief has been raised from credit unions, leagues, and support organizations.

The OCUF has granted $23,500 in disaster relief aid in 2012, including $5,000 to assist Colorado wildfire victims and $8,500 to credit union members affected by devastating storms locally.

The Ohio Credit Union Foundation, a 501(c)(3) public charitable foundation, is the philanthropic arm of the Ohio Credit Union League. The OCUF was incorporated in December 1997, began fundraising in 1998, and made its first grants in 1999.

The Ohio Credit Union League, with offices in Columbus, is a state trade association representing 370 credit unions. Credit unions are not-for-profit financial institutions owned and democratically-controlled by their members. Ohio credit unions provide savings, loans, and other consumer financial services to their 2.69 million members. To learn more, visit www.aSmarterChoice.org.
