NAFCU Launches Credit Union Tool for Sequestration Furlough Assistance

WASHINGTON, DC (May 15, 2013) The National Association of Federal Credit Unions (NAFCU) today launched a new web page for federal employees seeking assistance from a credit union to help with the financial challenges of the ongoing furlough process because of sequestration.

“Credit unions have a history of standing by their members during difficult times, and the sequester is no different," said Quincy Enoch, NAFCU associate director of legislative affairs and military liaison. "Right now, many credit unions are offering services like financial counseling and customized loans to help members stay afloat.”

NAFCU’s Credit Union Furlough Assistance web page is a one-stop destination for links to credit unions that have established furlough assistance programs for members. “Credit unions are doing great things to help their members,” said Enoch. “Hundreds of thousands will be negatively affected by furloughs. We want to make sure they know their credit unions are ready to help.”

“The sequester will affect federal employees across all agencies. Whether or not an individual’s credit union is offering a furlough assistance program, NAFCU is encouraging credit union members nationwide to visit their credit unions for help in finding solutions for their financial needs during this transitional period," said Enoch.

NAFCU will be updating the web page as needed to ensure credit unions offering programs are listed. The association will also share the list with military organizations.
