MD|DC Credit Union Association’s 2024 Tech Summit explores delivering security, convenience and value in a digital world

COLUMBIA, MD (September 16, 2024) — The MD|DC Credit Union Association’s fourth annual Tech Summit provided credit unions with a roadmap for success in the digital age. Industry leaders, innovators, and experts shared insights in three key areas: enhancing security, increasing convenience and delivering value. From AI-driven solutions to digital member engagement strategies, keynote speakers and panel discussions highlighted how credit unions can harness technology to drive growth, deepen engagement, boost operational performance, and stay ahead in a fast-evolving market.

“The Tech Summit is a unique opportunity to engage with top experts, participate in thought-provoking discussions, and gain practical insights that can help credit unions safely and successfully navigate the complexities of the digital world,” said John Bratsakis, President/CEO, MD|DC Credit Union Association. “This year’s theme focused on three areas essential to the future success of credit unions: delivering security, digital convenience and maximizing value through data and technology.”

Key topics and speakers included:

Dr. Ian McCulloh, Ph.D. Manager of Artificial Intelligence Continuing & Executive Education at Johns Hopkins University presented groundbreaking research on how organizational size and collaboration networks can help credit unions find the right balance between innovation and efficiency, transforming leadership and operational performance.

Rich Meszaros, VP and Head of Cross Border Money Management for North America at Visa Direct emphasized the importance of delivering a high-value, low-effort money movement experience to meet the demands of the next generation of consumers.

John Ainsworth, President/CEO, Bonifii moderated several panel discussions on how preventing and protecting against fraud is foundational to growth strategies.

John Sahagian, VP and Chief Data Officer at BCU discussed how data and AI can enhance member experiences, optimize operations, and reduce risks, enabling credit unions gain the competitive edge.

Becky Smith, EVP/Chief Revenue Officer from SECU of Maryland shared insights on utilizing digital channels to deepen member relationships, creating more personalized and engaging experiences for credit union members.

Nicole Reyes, VP of Risk Engagement at Velera addressed the latest fraud trends impacting credit unions and provided a deep dive into AI’s dual role in fraud prevention and the new challenges it presents.

Benson Porter, Fund Chairman and Advisor for Black Dragon Capital explored how strategic investments in fintech can allow credit unions to harness the latest technology, fostering a culture of innovation while addressing evolving member needs.

Charles Vice, Director of Financial Technology and Access at the NCUA updated attendees on the agency’s latest initiatives, highlighting how technology is reshaping the member experience and fostering greater financial inclusion.

Tanya Van Court, Founder and CEO of GoalSetter addressed the challenge of attracting the next generation of consumers, underscoring the need for digital agility and engagement.

The Tech Summit included the fourth annual FinTank Competition where fintechs pitched their innovative solutions for the challenges facing credit unions. Ribbon, an inheritance platform, was selected as the 2024 FinTank Champion.
