MCU Foundation donation reaches 100 Yonkers households impacted by gas outage

In Partnership With Yonkers City Council, MCU Foundation Gifted Public Housing Residents With Gift Cards For Meals

NEW YORK, NY (September 23, 2024) — The MCU Foundation donated $5,000 in gift cards for meals to public housing residents impacted by an extended gas outage in Yonkers, New York.

“Households across New York already struggle to access basic necessities that can keep them safe and healthy, and the MCU Foundation is committed to doing what it can to help those in greatest need during a time of crisis,” said MCU Foundation President George Chacon. “We’re grateful for the opportunity to help our neighbors during a challenging time, and we thank Yonkers City Council President Collins-Bellamy for her partnership in ensuring the support for impacted residents goes where it’s needed the most.”

“I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the Officers, staff and members of MCU for their generous donation of $5,000 in meal cards distributed to 100 families affected by the recent gas outage at the Palisade Towers in Yonkers,” said Yonkers City Council President Lakisha Collins-Bellamy. “Your generosity and swift, compassionate action ensure that our community neighbors feel the care and support they desperately need during this difficult time. Your participation as a community partner demonstrates that you are part of the fabric that makes us ‘Yonkers For All.’”

On Friday, Aug. 30, more than 400 households had their gas shut off at the Palisades Towers housing development in Yonkers, leaving residents without gas service. The MCU Foundation reached out to Yonkers City Council President Lakisha Collins-Bellamy to assist with the immediate response and was able to provide 100 gift cards of $50 each for restaurant-delivery services.

The Council President’s office helped distribute the cards to residents through the City of Yonkers’s Municipal Housing Authority within 24 hours of the outage.

Since its establishment, the MCU Foundation has successfully launched its first Basic Necessities campaign through support from MCU members and partners, providing New Yorkers in need with resources to address food, medicine, and transportation expenses.
