Local credit union makes a bold statement in a california downtown

Among the many things Modesto, California is known for, the vibrant downtown mural scene is iconic. A stroll through downtown reveals displays of engaging, sometimes provocative art in unexpected locations.

From modernistic interpretations of cats to classic depictions of American Graffiti, the walls of downtown Modesto have been transformed into a large, walkable, outdoor public art gallery.

Now, a new and unique piece is being added to the collection: the Mocse Credit Union building at 1400 J Street. The credit union commissioned a mural that adds a unique style to the mural collection, a distinct form of abstract painting by the artist known as Nick Abstract (nickabstract.com).

An additional unique dimension - the mural wraps the entire building, which has been painted specifically to frame and support the artwork.

The project began with a discussion between Mocse Credit Union’s CEO, Shane Saunders, and prolific local muralist, Aaron Vickery, founder and owner of Fasm Creative (fasm.net)

“When I walked the site with Aaron, I could really see his wheels turning,” said Saunders. “Aaron said he could create a mural, but he knew an artist that would be perfect for this architecture, with the added benefit of introducing a new style into the downtown collection.”

Vickery then coordinated a concept discussion between Nick Abstract and Mocse. It was important to Mocse to give wide creative latitude to the artistic process. “In our discussions with Aaron and Nick, we all agreed that this was an amazing opportunity to be true to the downtown scene and true to the art. We didn’t want anything resembling marketing or advertising,” said Saunders. “We wanted to give a gift to our community by contributing to the beautiful public art Modesto is known for.” Saunders added that the artists’ vision compelled the credit union to make the entire building a canvas, rather than a single wall.

The mural’s theme is Infinite Horizons, and pays homage to our area. Nick’s stated design rationale, “incorporates architectural elements and imagery inspired by the sky, portraying the cycle of day and night and symbolizing the strength and aspirations of the community. Drawing from the vivid hues of Modesto's sunsets, vibrant colors reflecting the area's lively character have been carefully selected. The goal is to seamlessly integrate with the building while injecting energy and interest, bringing joy and enrichment to all who encounter it. Ultimately, it serves as a symbol of shared identity and pride, enriching the vibrant atmosphere of Modesto."

The mural was completed in time for the annual Modesto Graffiti parade.
