(Indianapolis, IN) - Indiana Members Credit Union (IMCU), Central Indiana’s largest credit union, won First Place for the 2012 Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Community Service Award for credit unions in the state of Indiana. The Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Recognition Award Program, sponsored by the Indiana Credit Union League (ICUL) and the Credit Union National Association (CUNA), honors credit unions for their involvement and achievements in community projects and activities.
IMCU won first place in the $1 billion + assets category, for the state of Indiana which was presented at the Indiana Credit Union League’s 78th Annual Convention Chairman’s Awards Banquet on Friday, October 5th, at the JW Marriott in Indianapolis. Credit unions are divided into 9 categories based on asset size, at the state level. The ICUL selects first place winners from each of the categories.
IMCU’s entry portrayed its “People Helping People” philosophy by detailing the success of their 2011 Backpack Attack Campaign, which provided backpacks and school supplies to students in Marion and surrounding counties, along with other community initiatives. Throughout the year, IMCU held fundraising events geared toward supplying children with these necessary tools needed to begin the school year. As a result of the campaign, IMCU raised over $75,000. The funds were enough to purchase more than 87,500 school supplies.
Ron Collier, CEO of IMCU, said, “We are delighted to receive such a respected award in the credit union industry. The objective of our Backpack Attack Campaign was to provide students in need with the appropriate tools to be successful in their education. The support we received from our employees and generous members for this campaign was amazing and was the reason for the success of the campaign.”
The Dora Maxwell Social Responsibility Recognition Award has honored credit unions for charitable work in their communities since its inception in 1987. The competition is named after credit union pioneer, Dora Maxwell, who worked with several organizations to improve the living standards of the poor and needy. Maxwell was one of the original signers of CUNA’s constitution at Estes Park, Colorado, and worked as an organizer for the movement’s trade association and held numerous volunteer positions at the local and national level.
IMCU’s winning entry will advance to the national competition, where it will compete with other projects from credit unions in the same asset category ($1 billion +) nationwide. The winner will be announced at CUNA’s Governmental Affairs Conference in February 2013.
