Idea’l Trade Institute empowers students and transforms tribal communities with solutions for bathrooms

TUCSON, AZ (August 28, 2024) — Idea’l Trade Institute, a leading trade school dedicated to hands-on, impactful education, is making a significant difference in the lives of its students and Native American communities. Through its innovative solutions, students are learning essential trade skills while directly addressing a critical need within tribal nations—building modern bathrooms to replace outdated outhouses.

In many tribal communities, traditional bathrooms are still a rarity, forcing residents to rely on outhouses even in the modern age. Recognizing this issue, Idea’l Trade Institute has committed to equipping its students with the knowledge and practical experience needed to bring modern plumbing and sanitation facilities to these underserved areas.

“Our mission is to provide students with real-world skills that not only prepare them for successful careers but also allow them to make meaningful contributions to society,” said Clay Abernathy, Director of Idea’l Trade Institute. “By focusing on projects that directly impact the well-being of tribal communities, our students are learning the importance of their craft while witnessing the immediate benefits of their work.”

The program, which includes both classroom instruction and hands-on fieldwork, has already completed several bathroom installations on tribal lands. Students work closely with local community members, gaining valuable experience in plumbing, construction, and project management. These experiences are not only preparing them for future employment but also instilling a sense of pride and purpose as they see the positive impact of their efforts.

For the communities involved, the new bathrooms represent more than just a convenience—they symbolize progress and respect for their cultural needs. Access to proper sanitation facilities improves public health, enhances quality of life, and brings dignity to residents who have long lived without basic amenities that many take for granted.

“We are incredibly proud of our students and their dedication to this important work,” added Nelson Brown. ” This program is a testament to the power of education and the difference it can make, not only in the lives of our students but in the lives of those who benefit from their skills.”

As Idea’l Trade Institute continues to expand its efforts, the school hopes to inspire other institutions and organizations to take on similar projects, ensuring that all communities have access to the basic necessities of life.
