Hawaii State FCU launches inaugural Cares Day on Colombus Day with statewide community service and charitable giving campaign

HONOLULU, HI (October 15, 2024) — Hawaii State Federal Credit Union (Hawaii State FCU) took advantage of Columbus Day (Indigenous Peoples’ Day), a federal holiday not officially recognized as a state holiday in Hawaii, by launching its inaugural HSFCU Cares Day. While most financial institutions remained closed, Hawaii State FCU went a step further by closing all branches and headquarters operations to dedicate the day to community service and charitable giving. Through various volunteer projects across Oahu and Maui, employees spent the day supporting local nonprofits and giving back to the communities they serve.

“HSFCU Cares Day is our way of turning this holiday into an opportunity to give back,” said Andrew Rosen, president and CEO of Hawaii State FCU. “Our employees are passionate about supporting our community. By volunteering and making matching donations, we hope to make a bigger impact together.”

Hawaii State FCU employees spent the day working with the following nonprofit organizations on activities such as:

Loʻi Workday at Kākoʻo ʻŌiwi – Kaneohe
Meal Packing and Arts & Crafts with Kūpuna – Lanakila Pacific, Nuuanu
Bingo with Kūpuna – Palolo Chinese Home
Delivering Meals on Wheels – Various locations with Hawaii Meals on Wheels
Avocado Picking at Sunset Ranch – North Shore with Aloha Harvest
Gardening, Arts & Crafts, Bingo with Kūpuna – Maluhia, Kalihi
Meal Packing – Hawaii Foodbank
Cleaning – Binhi at Ani Filipino Community Center (Maui)
Financial Literacy Workshops for Kūpuna – Various libraries (Kaimuki, Kapolei, Downtown, Manoa)

To further amplify the impact, the Hawaii State FCU introduced the HSFCU Cares Day Charitable Match Giving Campaign, matching employee donations to the participating nonprofits, doubling the impact. Employees and members were encouraged to donate directly to the nonprofits hosting the volunteer projects. Today, over $6,000 was donated to nine organizations.

With more than 300 employees volunteering over 1,200 combined hours across nine nonprofits, HSFCU Cares Day focuses on the community impact areas of Kupuna, Financial Literacy and basic needs and necessities. This initiative reflects Hawaii State FCU’s commitment to serving Hawaii’s people, not only through financial services but by giving back to the community in a hands-on way.
