Grants awarded to financial literacy programs in the Dakotas

(December 15, 2014) — The Credit Union Foundation of the Dakotas (NCUF Partner) recently met and awarded four regional organizations with grants to support their financial literacy programs. Receiving awards are The ND Jump$tart Coalition, Sioux Falls Habitat For Humanity, Interlake Community Action of Madison, SD, Highmark Federal Credit Union of Rapid City, SD, and Market Place For Kids of ND.

Market Place for Kids offers a state financial literacy program teaching Entrepreneurship to grades 3-6. Over 9,000 children are reached each year at various locations throughout the state of North Dakota.

High Mark Federal Credit Union offers local teens in the Rapid City, SD area, a hands-on financial literacy experience with Mad City Money, a program of the Credit Union National Association.

Interlake Community Action Program, of Madison SD received funds for their VITA program, a tax assistance program for the low income and elderly.

Sioux Falls, SD Habitat for Humanity received funds for the “Hammering for Humanity” Program which teaches kids how to build an energy star level home, which is then sold to a qualifying low-income buyer with a no interest loan.

The North Dakota Jump$tart Coalition was funded for “Real World”. This program which runs in Fargo and Bismarck, ND teaches kids about money in an all-day free event with classes and a city. After the classes, the kids are put into a city with a job and family and are challenged to make it in the “Real World”. The event is run entirely on volunteers and donations.

The Credit Union Foundation of the Dakotas is funded by participating North and South Dakota Credit Unions. It funds projects in the areas of access to financial services, financial education, savings and asset accumulation, and small credit union development.
