Golden 1 Shred Event Eliminates More than 139,000 Pounds of Confidential Information

Sacramento, Calif., October 19, 2012—A Free Community Shred Event hosted by Golden 1 Credit Union on October 13, 2012, at the credit union’s Operations Center in Sacramento helped approximately 2,700 individuals by shredding their private and confidential documents, CDs and floppy disks.

More than 139,000 pounds of confidential information was destroyed on site by Iron Mountain, which then took the shredded remnants to be recycled. Since 2006, shredding events held by Golden 1 have destroyed more than 1,075,000 pounds of documents that contain personal and private information.

The Golden 1 Free Community Shred Events are an innovative way to help people protect themselves from identity theft and other related crimes. Documents that contain sensitive information, such as Social Security numbers, are often targeted by thieves who are looking to commit fraud.

“Identity theft is a serious problem, and Golden 1 wants to help the public avoid the possibility of it happening to them,” says Donna A. Bland, Golden 1’s President and CEO. “Our Shred Events keep personal and private information from falling into the wrong hands.”

Due to the success of its Shred Events, last year Golden 1 received the Dora Maxwell Responsibility Community Service Award from The California Credit Union League. The award is granted to a California credit union for its efforts to improve the lives of members of the community through outreach programs.
