Genisys Supports Local American Cancer Society Events

Genisys Sponsors Relay for Life in Shelby Township and Waterford

AUBURN HILLS, MI (June 21, 2013) Genisys Credit Union, which provides services to anyone who lives or works in the Lower Peninsula, recently sponsored American Cancer Society Relay for Life walks in Shelby Township and Waterford.

Relay for Life, a team-based, family-friendly fundraising event, is a fun and empowering way to make a difference in the fight against cancer. Relay happens in more than 6,200 communities worldwide and is a way for people to celebrate cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease in their own communities.

The Shelby relay, held at River Bends Park, had over 700 walkers present and was a great success. The lives of more than 150 cancer survivors were honored at the walk and more than $153,000 was raised to support the Society’s mission of saving lives.

The Waterford Relay, held at Pierce Middle School, had over 430 participants and 33 teams celebrated the lives of 125 cancer survivors. $160,000 was raised at the Waterford relay, surpassing American Cancer Society’s goal.

“Everything we do at Relay For Life contributes to reducing cancer mortality and incidences, whether it’s raising dollars that support free patient programs and services, research or volunteering to commit to advocacy and education efforts,” said American Cancer Society. “The relayers know and feel the urgency in this fight, and it shows in their dedication and pride with the event.”

“Through their hard work in preparing for the event, and by spending hours walking for the cause, Shelby Township & Waterford residents certainly did their part to help the American Cancer Society create a world with less cancer and more birthdays,” said Jackie Buchanan, President/CEO. “It’s critical that we come together during Relay to help the American Cancer Society achieve its mission of saving lives by helping people stay well, by helping people get well, by finding cures and by fighting back."

About The American Cancer Society
The American Cancer Society combines an unyielding passion with nearly a century of experience to save lives and end suffering from cancer. As a global grassroots force of more than three million volunteers, we fight for every birthday threatened by every cancer in every community. We save lives by helping people stay well by preventing cancer or detecting it early; by helping people get well by being there for them during and after a cancer diagnosis; by finding cures through investment in groundbreaking discovery; and by fighting back by rallying lawmakers to pass laws to defeat cancer and by rallying communities worldwide to join the fight. As the nation’s largest non-governmental investor in cancer research, contributing about $3.4 billion, we turn what we know about cancer into what we do. As a result, more than 11 million people in America who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will be celebrating birthdays this year. To learn more about us or to get help, call us anytime, day or night, at 1-800-227-2345 or visit cancer.org.
