Genisys Gives Detroit Dogs a Second Chance

Auburn Hills, MI, November 7, 2012 – Genisys Credit Union sponsored the Detroit Dog Rescue 5k and Fall Fest on October 21, 2012, at River Bends Park in Shelby Township.

The event helped raise money to create state of the art, no-kill shelters for the 50,000 stray or homeless dogs in the streets of Detroit.

“Detroit Dog Rescue makes a significant difference not only in the lives of thousands of furry friends each year, but also in our community,” said Jackie Buchanan, President/CEO.

The organization focuses on raising awareness of the mounting homeless and stray dog problem in Detroit, along with advocating for humane rescue alternatives such as no-kill sheltering, foster care, adoptions, pet identification and healthy pet population control through spay and neutering.

Detroit Dog Rescue also specializes in community outreach, and works closely with local city and statewide organizations in order to educate and involve people in this cause. They respond to calls to assist the Detroit Police Department, Highland Park Police Department, Hamtramck Police Department, Fire Departments, City Administration, and hundreds of residents who have asked for their help.

“With only twenty-three City of Detroit Animal Control Officers to perform rescue operations, nearly 90% of dogs picked up by the city are euthanized,” said Kelly McLaughlin, Detroit Dog Rescue Director of Programs & Development. “With limited resources and funding allocations to humane animal rescue operations, Detroit Dog Rescue is a small group of highly committed individuals dedicated to help make a difference in the city, one dog at a time.”

The 5k and Fall Fest also included DJ entertainment, kids activities, inflatables, local food vendors, adoptable dogs, dog product vendors, raffles, a silent auction and special discounts on Detroit Dog Rescue merchandise.
