floridacentral Credit Union announces retirement of President and CEO, Laida Garcia

TAMPA, FL (June 30, 2022) — floridacentral Credit Union announces the retirement of its President and CEO, Laida Garcia, effective January 2023. floridacentral, with assets of $625 million and more than 50,000 members, serves eleven counties along
Florida’s west coast and operates 12 branch offices.

“On behalf of the entire board, I want to share our heartfelt appreciation for Laida’s dedicated service”, Board Chair Margaret Spurrier said in a prepared statement. “Her leadership and dedication, not only to floridacentral, but to the credit union industry, exemplifies her commitment to credit union principles and values. We thank Laida for her contributions and wish her the very best in her well-deserved retirement.”

The board is already engaged in selecting Garcia’s successor and expects to announce their decision by late fall of this year. Garcia’s distinguished career in the credit union industry has spanned fours decades, beginning with positions as Loan Officer, Director of Marketing and Communications, and Senior Vice President/Chief Credit Officer. She served as Executive Vice President for eight years before becoming the credit union’s second President and CEO in 2009.

In addition to her leadership at floridacentral, Garcia has been an active advocate in the credit union industry. She served on the Credit Union National Association (CUNA) board for nine years, and chaired its charitable arm, the National Credit Union Foundation (NCUF) for three years. She also served on the board of the Florida Credit Union League, now known as the League of Southeastern Credit Unions (LSCU), for nine years, and as its chair for three years. In 2018, Garcia was named Professional of the Year by LSCU. She was also selected to serve as an inaugural member of the Filene Research Institute’s I-3 group – a community of leaders engaged in innovation solutions for the credit union industry.

I am incredibly proud of the work that the credit union has done in serving its members, employees and communities, and feel blessed to have been able to lead our great organization”, said Garcia in a prepared statement. “I am confident that floridacentral will continue to grow and to achieve great things under its new leadership.”
