Financial scenarios provide real-world training at 2017 CUNA Financial Management School

WASHINGTON, DC (February 8, 2017) — The 2017 CUNA Financial Management School will be held July 30-Aug. 3 in Las Vegas. Designed around the Stanford Bank Game, an asset-liability management (ALM) simulator, the school lets credit union professionals practice real-world financial management scenarios and develop a hands-on understanding of fiscal leadership.

“CUNA Financial Management School provides you with tools tailored for your success. Being a part of this program for three years has been a truly remarkable experience and has given me the opportunity to network with peers and instructors who bring skills and years of knowledge from their areas of expertise. I would definitely recommend anyone in the credit union industry to utilize this program,” said Camille Stephenson, financial analyst for Mazuma CU.

The school includes three separate parts of study, which may be taken independently of one another or succinctly:

  • Essentials: For new attendees, this part provides an introductory overview of fundamental financial management topics, including ratios, forecasting and investments.
  • Advanced: This second-year part exposes attendees to advanced financial management challenges, allowing them to grow their strategic instincts and decision making skills.
  • Executive Update: With financial management expertise now cultivated, this part allows professionals to dive even deeper into the pressing, high-level financial issues affecting their credit union.

Speakers at CUNA Financial Management School are experienced financial and economic experts, including CUNA Mutual Group Sales Executive Timothy Gardner, CUNA Director of Research Services Jeanne Sheahan and CUNA Mutual Chief Economist Steve Rick

“There are certain aspects of financial management that just can’t be taught. The Stanford Bank Game gives attendees firsthand experience,” said Amanda Schumacher, instructional design finance/operations manager at CUNA. “Through playing the game, attendees of CUNA Financial Management School discover the hidden, emergent challenges of financial strategy and gain the confidence to lead their credit unions to profitability and growth.”
