GRAFTON, MA (June 10, 2024) — In an effort to promote the observance World Elder Abuse Awareness month celebrating a theme of “Prioritizing Dignity, Safety, and Wellbeing for Older Survivors of All Identities,” Homefield Credit Union in Grafton, Massachusetts, hosted an educational forum on Thursday, June 6, at the Grafton Senior Center featuring a cast of subject-matter experts who discussed today’s growing trend of financial scams and fraud targeting older adults.
The Federal Trade Commission’s latest estimate reports more than $10 billion being lost in 2023 to financial scams. Thursday’s forum provided guidance to a capacity audience of older adults who joined with town leaders for the morning gathering and complementary luncheon that followed.
Mass. State Senator Mickael Moore; Jonathan Fielding with the Protective Services team at the Mass. Executive Office of Elder Affairs; Mary Freeley, Director of Mass. Attorney General Campbell’s Elder Justice Unit; Michael Festa, State AARP Director; and, Karl Moisan, President/CEO of Homefield Credit Union, topped the list of VIPs who addressed the gathering.
Others included Chief Crepeau of the Grafton Police Department, Zachary Hubacz of the US Secret Service, and Eric Giroux from the Securities and Exchange Commission.
