Derreck Kayongo announced as ED (Filene) Talk speaker at 2017 CUNA Governmental Affairs Conference

WASHINGTON, DC (October 24, 2016) — Business innovator Derreck Kayongo, founder of the Global Soap Project and CEO of the Center for Civil and Human Rights, will be the ED (Filene) Talk speaker at CUNA Governmental Affairs Conference in Washington, D.C. on February 27, 2017. The talk will be sponsored by CUNA Councils.

“Credit union professionals will be amazed, moved and inspired by Derreck’s story,” said Jim Nussle, President/CEO of CUNA. “The ingenuity, resourcefulness and dedication to the common good he demonstrates are exactly the values that the credit union movement thrives on. We thank CUNA Councils for making his appearance possible.”

Born in Uganda, Kayongo and his family fled to the U.S. before the coup of Idi Amin. Inspired by a trip to an American hotel, he created the Global Soap Project with his wife Sarah in 2009. The initiative collects discarded soap from hotels, makes it into new bars and distributes it to people around the world without access to clean soap. Starting humbly with nearby Atlanta hotels, the organization has since become a leading global health provider with more than 1,500 hotel partners across the country, partnering with Clean the World in 2015 to further expand its reach.

Kayongo has served in leadership positions at non-governmental organizations (NGOs) since 1994, and currently runs the Center for Civil and Human Rights in Atlanta, a museum dedicated to the history, awareness and dialogue of human and civil rights issues around the world.

Debuting at the 2015 CUNA GAC, ED (Filene) Talks feature innovative, dynamic thinking with the power to stimulate credit union growth. CUNA GAC attendees will be thoroughly engaged by Kayongo’s high-energy, lighthearted speaking style and incredible personal narrative.
