Today, the Defense Credit Union Council (DCUC) sent a letter to the House Committee on Oversight and Accountability, Subcommittee on Government Operations, expressing appreciation for the Subcommittee’s efforts to improve the Department of Defense’s (DoD) financial management. DCUC also noted key challenges facing defense credit unions operating on military installations.
In the letter, DCUC Chief Advocacy Officer Jason Stverak highlighted obstacles such as costly lease terms, erosion of the longstanding "one bank-one credit union" policy, and overinterpretation of federal ethics rules that restrict credit union support for military communities. These issues, DCUC warned, could reduce financial service access and readiness for service members.
Proposed solutions included closer collaboration with DoD to deliver financial literacy programs—leveraging credit unions' existing expertise at no additional cost to taxpayers. DCUC also called for eliminating redundant or duplicative programs and empowering credit unions to expand financial education efforts across military bases stateside and abroad.
“Defense credit unions are proud to serve those who serve our nation,” says Anthony Hernandez, DCUC President/CEO. “We are committed to working alongside Congress and the Department to improve financial readiness and ensure a strong, resilient military community.”
