CUNA/League system named top financial services trade association by National Journal

WASHINGTON, DC (December 15, 2016) — A National Journal survey of policymakers found the CUNA/League system ranked first among all financial services trade associations studied in terms of advocacy effectiveness. This quantitative analysis, based on a survey of policymakers who were aware of CUNA, found the CUNA/League system to be 6th out of the top 44 associations studied across all industries.

“The CUNA/League system is viewed as a respected and trusted voice and advocate for credit union interests among policymakers to advance the interests of credit unions,” said Jim Nussle, president/CEO of CUNA. “The competition for attention is fierce in Washington, so knowing where we stand among those we want to influence is important. Being respected as a trusted source among policymakers means they listen to us when we call and visit, which is more important than ever with the launch of our advocacy campaign to rein in excessive regulations that are hurting credit unions.”

The survey results show that policymakers believe:

  • The CUNA/League system has the most bipartisan identity in its peer group of financial services associations. Democrats and Republicans rated CUNA essentially equally.
  • The CUNA/League system punches above its weight. CUNA’s identity is stronger than similar resourced groups, i.e. groups with a similar number of lobbyists, PAC spending, and total assets.
  • The CUNA/League system’s lobbying representation and grassroots are a strength. CUNA is viewed positively among Democratic and Republican policymakers for building and maintaining direct relationships.
