MADISON, Wis. — The Credit Union Executives Society is pleased to announce Daniel McGowan, CPA, CMA, CITP, CGMA, CCE, SVP/chief financial officer at Pioneer West Virginia Federal Credit Union, Charleston, W.V., is its 2012 CUES Exceptional Leader award winner. He will be honored at CUES’ CEO/Executive Team Network™, on Sunday, November 4, at The Ritz-Carlton Palm Beach, in Manalapan, Fla.

“I’m pleased to say Dan was also honored by CUES in 2010, when he was inducted into the CUES Rising 100 program,” said Fred Johnson, CUES’ president/CEO. “He had the potential for great leadership then, and has achieved a tremendous amount since 2010.”

McGowan is part of a management team which, over a two year period, led Pioneer from an under-performing credit union, to having a $1 million net income in 2011. Due to this improvement, Pioneer was recognized by the National Association of Federal Credit Unions (NAFCU) as “Credit Union of the Year” for 2012.

Additionally, McGowan was recognized as the credit union industry’s “Professional of the Year” by the NAFCU in 2011, and was named “CFO of the Year” for the credit union industry by Credit Union Times in 2009.

McGowan is also credited with leading two successful mergers, one completed on May 1, 2011, and a second completed on February 1, 2012. Additionally, McGowan conducted the first ever “Financial Literacy” training program for the credit union’s board members; this activity received high marks from the board and is scheduled to continue in 2012 with more advanced topics.

Formerly known as CUES Future Leader, the CUES Exceptional Leader award acknowledges tomorrow’s decision-makers for their ambition, participation and devotion to their credit union and the movement. Nominees are evaluated on their accomplishments within their credit union and the movement; contributions made to CUES and its Councils; ongoing professional development; a letter of recommendation from their CEO; and community contributions. Additionally, the judges review the nominees’ leadership goals and problem-solving abilities.
