Credit union-supported candidates found success during Tuesday’s primaries across eight states, including several in notable and competitive races. Candidates are supported by state leagues, CUNA and the Credit Union Legislative Action Council (CULAC), CUNA’s political action committee.
Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) finished first in her primary, which featured 31 challengers from both parties. Feinstein has the support of CULAC and the California Credit Union League.
Under California law, the top two finishers will compete in November. Votes are still being counted as of Wednesday afternoon to determine Feinstein’s opponent.
Other notable wins Tuesday include (with credit union-backed candidates in bold):
- Alabama 2nd Congressional District: incumbent Rep. Martha Roby (R-Ala.) led all candidates with 39% of the vote in the Republican primary, but failed to get 50% of the vote, so she will face off against former Rep. Bobby Bright in a runoff July 17;
- California 10th Congressional District: Rep. Jeff Denham (R-Calif.) won his primary with 38% of the vote, and will face Democrat Josh Harder in November;
- Mississippi 3rd Congressional District: District Attorney Michael Guest led all candidates with 45% of the vote, and will face businessman Whit Hughes, who got 22% of votes, in a June 26 runoff; and
- New Jersey 2nd Congressional District: State Sen. Jeff Van Drew won the Democratic primary with 55% of the vote. He will face Republican Seth Grossman in November in a district that leans Democratic.
