Credit unions giveback to homeless children in D.C. at GAC
WASHINGTON, DC (January 19, 2017) — The 2017 CUNA Governmental Affairs Conference (CUNA GAC) will feature the conference’s first-ever giveback event. Attendees are asked to bring items for a donation drive in support of Bright Beginnings, a nationally accredited child and family development center that offers a bright start for homeless infants, toddlers, preschoolers and their families in Washington, D.C.
“Because CUNA GAC gathers so many credit union professionals in one place, it is the perfect venue for charitable giving,” said CUNA President/CEO Jim Nussle. “I am confident that our collective generosity will help Bright Beginnings make the future much more hopeful for children in need in Washington, D.C.”
In keeping with CUNA’s tradition of incorporating member feedback, Nussle was inspired to create the giveback event after it was suggested by Matt Helms, vice president of human resources and training at Corporate America Family CU in Elgin, Ill., during the 2016 GAC town hall meeting.
“Bright Beginnings is an awesome charity and we have the opportunity to help so many people in such an easy way,” said Matt Helms, vice president of human resources and training at Corporate America Family CU. “We can show, in a tangible and amazing way, the good credit unions do.”
Bright Beginnings is requesting that attendees bring a critical care item from one of five categories:
- Diapers (Sizes 4,5 & 6)
- Baby Wipes
- Socks (Sizes 2T-5T/Youth)
- Hat/Mittens (Sizes Infant/Toddler/Youth)
- Books (For children up to 6)
Items can be dropped off during GAC at the Washington Convention Center Exhibit Hall. Attendees unable to bring an item can also make a donation to Bright Beginnings on behalf of America’s Credit Unions.
Taking place February 26-March 2, 2017, in Washington, D.C., CUNA GAC is the largest advocacy event in the credit union movement, a venue for attendees to meet with representatives to discuss credit union issues. CUNA GAC also hosts keynote sessions from leaders in business, media and politics, an expansive vendor showcase and thrilling evening entertainment.
