Credit union provides path to homeownership

HealthShare grants $50,000 in down payment assistance

GREENSBORO, NC (September 17, 2024) — To support financial stability and homeownership for low-income members, HealthShare Federal Credit Union announced five $10,000 down payment grants, helping turn the dream of homeownership into reality for deserving individuals.

“This is more than just a grant; it’s an opportunity to empower our members and strengthen our community,” said President and CEO Genice DeCorte. “By awarding these down payment grants, we’re continuing our mission to provide financial confidence and help our members experience more joy in life.”

The five down payment grants, totaling $50,000, was provided through the National Credit Union Administration’s (NCUA) Community Development Revolving Loan Fund (CDRLF). This initiative focuses on promoting economic growth and financial independence for lower-income individuals, aligning with HealthShare’s dedication to serving its members.

Last year, the Center for the Study of Economic Mobility for the city of Greensboro’s Housing and Neighborhood Development department reported declining homeownership rates in the city, from 56% in 2009 to around 51% by 2021. The number of homes less than $200,000 has shrunk as well, with a 7% decline for homes sold between $100,000-$200,000.

“(HealthShare) was very patient and reassuring throughout the whole process of making my dreams come true in becoming a homeowner,” said Gejetta Wooden, who recently financed a home with HealthShare. “I can’t thank Lindsay (Calkins) enough for what she has done for me.”

The five $10,000 grants will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis to qualifying members who meet income requirements and loan approval. Those chosen will also complete an 8-hour online homeownership course. Interested members are encouraged to contact Lindsay.calkins@conehealth.com or 336-404-9965 to begin the application process.

“These grants symbolize hope and a path toward financial stability for our members,” added DeCorte. “While money can’t buy happiness, for these five families, it’s helping them buy something just as meaningful – the joy of owning a home. We couldn’t be more thrilled to play a part in this life-changing journey.”
