Allegacy hosts 25th annual “Don’t Wait” golf tournament to increase early cancer awareness and detection

Tournament has raised more than $1.3 million for Cancer Services, Inc.

WINSTON-SALEM, NC (October 18, 2024) — Allegacy Federal Credit Union will host the 25th annual “Don’t Wait” Golf Tournament on Tuesday, October 22 at the Bermuda Run Country Club in Bermuda Run, North Carolina.

To date, the annual tournament has raised more than $1.3 million for Cancer Services, Inc., a local United Way agency established “to enhance the quality of life for those living with cancer, and to provide the gift of life through education.” The agency serves cancer survivors with any type of cancer and offers services and programs at no cost to cancer survivors and their families.

A 25-YEAR HISTORY

In 1998, three Allegacy employees were diagnosed with breast cancer. At about the same time, Allegacy’s former president and CEO lost a close friend to ovarian cancer. The following year, Allegacy decided to host a golf tournament to increase awareness of the importance of early detection of such cancers and raise funds to support Cancer Services, Inc.

“The primary way to battle breast and ovarian cancers is through early detection, thus the tournament was named “DW” which stands for “Don’t Wait,” said Allegacy’s Senior Community Wellbeing Specialist Debbie McCliment. “Twenty-five years later, many of our active and retired employees, their family members and friends, and our members continue to be touched in some way by these cancers.”

FUNDRAISING GOAL: $50,000

Allegacy invites all residents to participate in this important event by golfing, sponsoring, or donating. Contributions will ensure an appreciable amount is donated to Cancer Services, Inc. The credit union relies heavily on donations and participation from vendors, community businesses, friends, members and families to meet the annual fundraising goal of $50,000.

“For the past 25 years, the ‘Don’t Wait’ Golf Tournament has been a testament to the power of community and the importance of early cancer detection,” said Nathanael Tarwasokono, President and CEO of Allegacy Federal Credit Union. “Raising over $1.3 million for Cancer Services, Inc. is a reflection of the commitment and dedication of our Allegacy members, partners, and teammates. We’re proud of the impact we’ve made together in supporting cancer survivors and promoting early awareness.”
