Advisors Make it a Habit of Digging Deep to Give Back

CUNA Brokerage Services, Inc. Donates Sweat Equity and $4,500 to Charities

MADISON, Wis. – CUNA Brokerage Services, Inc.’s senior advisors are making a habit of giving back at their annual gatherings.

This year, 37 senior advisors of CUNA Brokerage Services, Inc. (CBSI), helped build a home for the Last Vegas Habitat for Humanity and after the build contributed a total of $4,500 to charities.

The advisors who chipped in money and time, make up CBSI’s Senior Advisor Leadership Team, and call themselves the “Give Back Group.”

“Every year we have a national senior advisor leadership team conference, and every year the first day is always a give back day,” said Jim Metz, president and CEO, CUNA Brokerage Services, Inc.

The Give Back Group was established in 2008 as part of CBSI’s annual financial advisor meeting. Every year for the past five years the group gives time and money to a different organization ranging from visiting a children’s hospital to volunteering at a food pantry.

This year, the group chose to help build a home through Habitat for Humanity in Las Vegas. Eighteen senior advisors and their spouses helped build the second story of a new house, Metz said. Building materials and equipment were provided by Habitat for Humanity.

Habitat for Humanity Las Vegas builds single-family homes throughout Clark County for working families earning less than 80 percent of the area’s median income.

“Our task was to help construct the roof on a semi-constructed home,” said Ric Pearson, senior consultant, practice and wealth management, CBSI. “We had to lift the trusses up to the top of the unfinished structure without a crane, only sheer muscle and sweat got them up.”

The Give Back Group did not stop there, though. After they finished their build day, the advisors donated $2,000 to Habitat for Humanity Las Vegas, and then went back to their meeting and made three more donations:

  • $500 to the Women of Distinction scholarship fund, which recognizes women in the financial services industry;
  • $1,000 to the Adaptive Sports for Kids Foundation to fund autistic recreation; and
  • $1,000 to the Ed Thomas Family Foundation to provide opportunities to young adults through scholarships in Iowa.

“I’m just happy to be able to work with a group that would take the time to give back like they do. It really reflects the credit union model,” said Metz.
