Muncipal Credit Union Foundation donates $10,000 to support impacted Floridians after Hurricane Milton

NEW YORK, NY (October 25, 2024) — Today, Municipal Credit Union announced that its charitable arm, the MCU Foundation, has made a donation of $10,000 to Suncoast Credit Union toward providing basic necessities in the aftermath of Hurricane Milton.

“At MCU, we believe in the power of community and solidarity, especially in times of crisis,” said Kyle Markland, CEO of Municipal Credit Union. “When we set up the MCU Foundation, one of its focus areas is helping people and communities with basic necessities, which is why we are proud to work with Suncoast Credit Union to aid in their Hurricane Milton relief efforts. Together, we can make a real difference in the lives of our fellow credit union employees impacted by this devastating storm.”

“This donation from the MCU Foundation embodies the credit union philosophy of ‘people helping people,’ a principle that extends far beyond financial services,” said Kevin Johnson, President and CEO, Suncoast Credit Union. “In the aftermath of Hurricane Milton, our strength as a community is rooted in our ability to come together and support one another. This contribution will provide crucial recovery assistance to our Suncoast employees affected by the hurricane, and we are truly grateful for this meaningful act of generosity.”

Based in Tampa, Suncoast Credit Union—the largest credit union in Florida—and its membership were directly impacted by Hurricane Milton, a Category 3 storm that made landfall on Florida’s western coast on October 9. The storm caused widespread destruction across the state, including severe flooding, storm surges, tornadoes, and power outages affecting over 3 million homes and businesses.

In response, Suncoast Credit Union was forced to temporarily close its 79 branch offices — which have since reopened – its ITM services, and its member care center before the storm hit. MCU Foundation’s donation will help supplement existing assistance programs for Suncoast Credit Union’s impacted employees in need of basic necessities such as food, clothing and shelter.
