(Lake Mary, FL) – CFE Federal Credit Union presented Dr. Thomas J. Dorsey, D.D.S. (Doc) with the CFE Hero Award for 2012, along with a reward of $500. Dr. Dorsey was selected to receive this award for his vision and successful implementation of a program in Orlando with a focus on exposing and teaching minority and inner city youth the game of golf. Doc’s vision was not only to create a sporting activity, but included development of life values such as building self confidence, decision making, self discipline, character building and mental toughness.
Dr. Dorsey founded the Orlando Minority Youth Golf Association (OMYGA) in 1991 as a resource for minority youth, as well as for any child desiring to learn the game of golf. Over a dozen students in the OMYGA program have received golf scholarships, making it possible for them to receive a college degree.
“I’m so pleased to see that Dr. Dorsey was selected to receive this award,” said a surprised James (Chief) Wilson, CFE Board member, when the announcement was made. “Dr. Dorsey was a student of mine at Jones High School and I am proud to have been his teacher, plus I am extremely proud of his philanthropic accomplishments.”
The CFE Hero Award was established to give members a chance to recognize a hero based on the credit union philosophy of “people helping people.” Members were invited to nominate someone who goes above and beyond the ordinary to serve our community, thereby making a positive difference in the lives of people and the Central Florida community. Dr. Dorsey’s entry was submitted by Edward C. Everett, who received a reward of $150 for his winning hero.
