You’ve just started in your new role… now what? Getting acclimated to a new position can be hectic but it’s important to remain focused. Within your first month, consider these tips for establishing yourself in the company and getting into your new groove.

Learn the company culture

Each and every office has a different way of conducting business. Some are relaxed and unstructured while others are more by-the-book when it comes to company culture. Pay close attention to how others interact in the office and learn what is accepted and what is frowned upon. Do your colleagues frequently check their cellphones and converse about personal topics? Or, is the workplace more formal and business-like?

Clearly define your role

Whether you’ve moved on to a new position in the same organization or you’re part of a new company altogether, it’s important you begin your time by knowing exactly what is expected of you. That doesn’t mean just having a mild comprehension of your job description. Sit down with your manager and go over in detail your personal goals as well as how you will be expected to contribute to the company’s overall success.

Get to know every colleague

Don’t wait for employees to introduce themselves. Be proactive and go out of your way to make a connection with everyone in the office. That doesn’t mean you have to go out to lunch with everyone, but you should make an effort to understand who you’ll be working with. Remember, you don’t have to be best friends, but it’s a lot easier to work together as a team when you have a positive rapport with your office associates.
