BUFFALO, NY (August 8, 2024) |
Buffalo Metropolitan Federal Credit Union (BMFCU) is proud to announce the winners of its first annual Inspiring Unity Scholarship. The Inspiring Unity Scholarship is in honor of three BMFCU members who lost their lives in the 2022 Buffalo Mass shooting and supports the education of young leaders who share their values of diversity and inclusion.
The Inspiring Unity Scholarship recipients are Ilias Day, Kerron Miller, and Alicia Reed, three outstanding students who have demonstrated their commitment to fostering positive change and unity in their community and beyond. They will each receive a $1,000.00 scholarship to help them pursue their post-secondary education goals.
“These three students embody the spirit and vision of our Inspiring Unity Scholarship,” said Jeanne Stadler, CEO of BMFCU. “They have shown remarkable achievements, leadership, and dedication to making a difference in the world. We are honored to support their dreams and aspirations, and we look forward to seeing what they will accomplish in the future.”
The Inspiring Unity Scholarship was established in 2023 by BMFCU to honor the lives and legacies of Katherine Massey, Ruth Whitfield, and Aaron Salter, three BMFCU members who were tragically killed in the 2022 Buffalo Mass shooting. They were advocates of unity and diversity in Buffalo, and they cared deeply about the education and empowerment of our community’s youth.
The scholarship is open to high school seniors who are BMFCU members and who plan to enroll in an accredited two-year or four-year college or university. Applicants must submit an essay describing how they have promoted or plan to promote unity and diversity in their community or society.
BMFCU will continue to offer the Inspiring Unity Scholarship annually to honor the memory of Katherine, Ruth, and Aaron, and to support the next generation of Buffalo leaders.
