SECU MD, Maryland’s largest credit union, has been recognized as Chapter Volunteer of the Year by The Arc Maryland, the largest statewide nonprofit organization dedicated to the rights and quality of life of persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) and their families. Every year, each chapter of The Arc in Maryland identifies one person or group who has gone above and beyond in their service to the organization to be honored with the award. The community team at SECU received this prestigious award for volunteer work with The Arc Montgomery County chapter and will be formally recognized at the Arc Maryland State Convention and Awards Breakfast on May 30th.
“It is an incredible honor to receive this recognition from The Arc team that we have worked so closely with over the last year,” said Breanna Hill, Community Engagement Specialist at SECU MD who has nurtured the credit union’s relationship with Arc and other community nonprofits. “At SECU, we take immense pride in supporting everyone in every part of the communities we serve, and that means dedicating time and resources to organizations like The Arc, who are providing critically needed services to families, adults, and children with disabilities. We treasure our relationship with The Arc team and are so grateful to have had the opportunity to support their staff and the individuals they serve all year round.”
In 2023, as one of SECU’s annual Day of Kindness activities, SECU volunteers came together to refresh a home for a group of four residents that live independently with intellectual disabilities. Volunteers cleaned, reorganized, decorated and went above and beyond in order to bring new life to the home and support the residents’ needs.
The team at SECU also provided critical support to The Arc through the credit union’s annual Holiday Adoption initiative, where staff and volunteers “adopted” youth and residents of the Arc’s programs, including adopting three families from The Arc Montgomery County Karasik Family, Infant & Child Care Center (KFICCC), a progressive, family-centered childcare program that supports low-income families with a child with a disability.
The credit union also adopted 11 residents from three of The Arc’s inclusive living homes for adults living independently with I/DD. Many of the adults in the inclusive living homes have limited or no family to celebrate with during the holiday season, and SECU volunteers stepped in to provide basic needs, special gifts, and companionship and support.
