DCUC Conference: Day one recap

DCUC’s Annual Conference celebrates the difference credit unions make to our nation’s military and veterans. It is a chance for credit unions to come together and discuss the specific challenges that come with serving this special population and get updates on the latest legislative and regulatory issues.

“One of the main reasons I come to DCUC is to reconnect with people that we’ve met over the years, share ideas, and then today’s session was great because it’s so progressive, it’s moving forward, it’s all the things we talk about and plan on that they reconfirm for us,” shared Chip Dykes, VP Community Development, Frontwave CU. “And it’s also great to have our board members here so they can hear that message too, so when we as staff are proposing changes, we have board members here who hear it and go ‘oh, that’s where it’s coming from.’ That type of environment is critical for any credit union. So, we’re very happy to be here and thank DCUC for all you do for us.”

This year’s Annual Conference officially opened on Wednesday morning with its traditional patriotic opening ceremony. Following this, Caroline Willard, Cornerstone League’s President/CEO, welcomed attendees to the great state of Texas. She discussed how the credit union industry is at an inflection point, emphasizing the importance of advocacy at both a local and regional level.

The morning session continued with powerful presentations focused on technology, regulation, and innovation. Keynoter Rachel Wilson, a former leader at the NSA and Managing Director and Head of Cybersecurity at Morgan Stanley Wealth Management, shared her expertise on how we can all be safer citizens of the internet. Next, Anthony Hernandez, DCUC’s President/CEO was joined by NCUA Vice Chairman Kyle Hauptman for an engaging conversation on vulnerabilities and opportunities for credit unions. Following their conversation, Filene Research Institute’s Chief Product Officer, Christie Kimbell took the stage to share Filene’s latest research on navigating uncertainty and how to apply the five Es of growth to get practical results at your credit union.

Other highlights from the day included the FinTech Forum, Military Representative Panel, and presentation from CUNA Mutual Group. The FinTech Forum’s three rapid fire sessions explored commercial lending trends, crypto, and card fraud. The Military Representaive Panel brought together representatives from across the branches of service to discuss regulations and the changing landscapes that credit unions face on installations.

The day concluded with a Sponsor Reception, where attendees and sponsors networked and continued to raise funds for Armed Services YMCA.
