On October 1, Neighbors FCU launched a free checking account that pays five cents to the member and five cents to charity for every debit card swipe. Free Cash Back Checking accounts have no monthly service charge and requires no minimum balance or direct deposit.
Current members and anyone who lives, works, worships or attends school in the nine-parish Greater Baton Rouge Area can open an account online at www.neighborsfcu.org/free-cash-back-checking/ or come into to any one of Neighbors’ nine branches.
"It is with great pleasure that we announce Neighbors is now offering a free checking account that pays money back to the member and to the community," Neighbors CEO and President Steve Webb said.
"The beauty of this product is that you don't have to choose between an account that's free or an account that gives rewards. For every debit card swipe, Neighbors will give five cents to the member and five cents to charity."
To earn the cash back offer, the member must enroll in e-statements and have direct deposits totaling $500 or more per month. If those requirements are still not met, the account will still be free.
At the end of every month, Neighbors will add five cents to the members account and five cents to the Neighbors Capital Area Foundation for every swipe.
Through the Neighbors Capital Area Foundation, Neighbors contributes more than $100,000 annually to various local charitable organizations in the form of employee volunteer hours, financial support, event sponsorship and in-kind donations.
In May, the foundation awarded $15,000 in scholarships to nine graduating seniors at local schools.
