Sb1 Federal Credit Union educates students in summer program

PHILADELPHIA, PA (May 15, 2014) -- Sb1 Federal Credit Union (Sb1) will lead the financial education efforts in the summer program at EducationWorks providing 250 high school students aged 14-18 with basic and solid financial education on various topics that include What is Banking, How to Budget and The Value of Saving.

“Sb1 is thrilled to offer these financial education seminars to students who may not have been exposed to any type of financial education. The staff at Sb1 feel it is extremely important that these types of financial literacy conversations are occurring at an age when they begin to contemplate graduation, begin working and become responsible for daily expenses”, says Vice President of Marketing, Diane Childs Heath. “For Sb1 to be able to reach these many students in this summer program at an early age gives them a head start for the challenges they will encounter and be better equipped to make good decisions.”

EducationWorks has tremendous impact in neighborhoods hard hit by poverty, low employment and low educational achievement. Backed by their experienced program management and hundreds of trained staff, they improve the lives of over 15,000 students and families annually. Providing a financial education component to these families provides key knowledge to help alleviate potential financial pitfalls.

“Through our youth employment program, teens serve as junior summer camp counselors which provide them their first exposure to the workplace while learning skills that will allow them to be successful in the workplace. It provides them basic work habits such as showing up on time and teamwork and we wanted a financial component as well. We were impressed with the Sb1 Federal Credit Union staff and what they could provide our program, says Craig Heim, EducationWorks Pennsylvania Assistant Director.
