Georgia United Credit Union Assembles, Donates 8,000 Meal & Personal Care Kits to Gateway Center

DULUTH, GA (February 19, 2013) - Monday, February 18 was Presidents’ Day, a federal holiday, when government offices, schools and banking institutions were closed. However, you wouldn’t have found the 220 employees of Georgia United Credit Union taking the day off.   That’s the date of Georgia United’s Annual Team Day Community Service Project when employees gather from across the state to work in assembly-line fashion to produce, package and deliver 4,000 meal kits and 4,000 personal care kits to the Gateway Center of Atlanta. The Gateway Center is Atlanta’s largest homeless services organization and has helped more than 40,000 homeless individuals over the last six years.

Georgia United Credit Union holds a TEAM Day each year for a day of training and motivation for its employees on a federal holiday. This is the third year that the Credit Union decided to combine this annual employee event with a community service project. That first year, credit union employees donated 2,000 kits and last year, Georgia United doubled that amount (4,000).  This year, Georgia United’s President & CEO Doug Foote challenged the employees to double their donation to 8,000 kits.  Foote shares, “We are a service organization and our employees always enjoy giving back to our community so I knew we could meet this challenge…We just needed a bigger truck!”

The 4,000 meal kits contained pop top foods like Vienna sausage, snacks, apple sauce, cookies, bottled water, and the 4,000 hygiene kits included washcloths, towels, soap, shampoo, deodorant, razors, and shaving cream.  Georgia United purchased all the supplies and Rock Tenn Corporation donated the kit boxes.
