South Dakota Legislators Learning from Credit Union Chapter Events

Bismarck, ND - The Credit Union Association of the Dakotas’ (CUAD) CEO Robbie Thompson and Jeff Olson, VP of Advocacy and Awareness, attended and presented at three legislative chapter meetings that were held in South Dakota last week.

These chapter meetings allowed South Dakota candidates and current legislators the opportunity to network and learn more about credit unions from a CUAD staff presentation.

South Dakota legislators left these meetings with some facts and figures about credit unions they likely did not know before.  They also got to hear about the issues impacting credit unions and what credit unions are looking for from the upcoming session.

In Huron, SD on October 16th six legislators and candidates attended.  On October 18th in Rapid City, eleven candidates and legislators were in attendance.  And, in Sioux Falls on October 18th, there were fourteen legislators and candidates in attendance.

“These legislative chapter meetings have been conducted the Dakotas for a number of years now, and they have been very successful in helping credit unions establish and build relationships with legislators.  Now, we are putting a greater emphasis on building these meeting and holding them regularly” said Thompson.

Jeff Schmidt, GAC Committee Chair and COO at Voyage FCU added “Some of the primary goals of the South Dakota GAC Committee this year were to try to hold more legislative chapter meetings, raise more CUPAC dollars and to ensure that most PAC checks were distributed by local credit unions.  We have been successful at meeting all three of those goals.”

Headquartered in Bismarck, Credit Union Association of the Dakotas (CUAD) is the trade association serving credit unions in the Dakotas.  CUAD serves 73 credit unions in North and South Dakota, serving over 406,000 members, with assets in excess of $4.6 billion.  For more information about CUAD visit our website at www.cuad.coop
