While my family is mostly content to watch our favorite characters at home on Netflix or Amazon Prime, there are some we have to experience first in the movie theater … like every new Marvel, DC or Star Wars movie.
Our weekend splurge on the latest Marvel Universe movie, after popcorn and drinks, totaled more than $65 for our family of four. That’s pricey enough to make Hulk want to smash.
Usually we wait two to three weeks after a movie is released to see it on “Tightwad Tuesdays” at our favorite local dine-and-recline theater. Tickets are only $8 and the popcorn is just $2.50.
I admit the ability to pre-select our recliner seats and have dessert or an adult beverage while watching the movie has spoiled us all. It’s hard to go back to lining up early to get a good seat on opening weekend.
Here are a few ways you can enjoy going out to the movies without your wallet taking a huge hit.
Dollar Movie Theaters: There probably won’t be any luxuriously reclining seats here, but it’s a way to get the traditional movie theater experience for only $2 to $4 per person. The selection is a mix of some new and the previous year’s blockbusters; think Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Coco or Justice League.
Value Days: Every movie theater has value days (usually Mondays through Wednesdays) when tickets and concession stand items are at a discounted rate. Added bonus? It generally includes new movie releases! Depending where you live, some ticket prices can be as low as $5. Take advantage of these when you can.
Sign up for theater loyalty programs: Membership is free and reward points are earned with every purchase. In general, reward points can go toward free tickets, popcorn, soda and even some merchandising. Members can also get coupons and additional concession stand discounts and deals like a free refills on Value Days.
Bring Your Own Candy: I know, it’s awful, but hear me out. Besides the candy being overpriced, it’s also oversized for the kids. I’d rather give them two mini fun-sized Skittles or mini Kit Kats than have to deal with the sugar rush later. Plus, I still buy drinks or popcorn from the theatre, to ease the guilt.
