3 ways to keep your colleagues from getting you down

Sometimes it’s hard not to let others’ attitudes influence you in the workplace. A colleague who’s perpetually down in the dumps can easily overshadow your professional accomplishments. Keep your head up and consider these three ways you can keep your coworkers from getting you down.

Take it slow

If an employee at work makes an inappropriate comment or is rude to you or someone else, before your emotions take over, take a minute to compose yourself. The less reactive you are, the better you will feel in the end. Take things in stride and try not to let every little thing bother you.

Be an example

There are certain habits that the most likeable people tend to have in common. When you are poised, polished, and considerate, others will catch on and will gravitate toward you. Instead of letting negativity at work get you down, show your colleagues how being positive and happy can make a difference in workplace morale.

Always empathize

It’s important to have your own opinions because being assertive at work will serve you well. But, don’t forget the value in appreciating opposing views. Put yourself in your coworker’s shoes and try to understand why they feel the way they do. Viewing issues at work from others’ perspectives can lead to healthy debate that can in turn encourage innovation.
